What a fun oddball this one is. We do not get many Burns guitars passing through our corner of Kentucky, so we are always excited when one turns up, especially an Ampeg-era example. That partnership was short-lived, with Burns instruments marketed here under the Ampeg name in 1963 and 1964, and exact production totals are murky enough that the safest thing to say is what we already knew when this one walked in: it is for sure rare.

This one has all the stuff that makes these so cool. The stock custom color red finish has mellowed into a killer orange-y hue, the flame in the maple neck is a nice bonus, and the whole thing just looks right. It is 100% original aside from the missing tremolo cover. No signs of abuse or neglect here, just normal honest wear and tear.

Better yet, it is not just quirky, it is actually a great guitar. The neck is straight, fretwear is minimal and not affecting intonation, the truss rod works in both directions, and all of the original electronics are working exactly as they should. These are surprisingly versatile guitars, and every setting on this one is usable. There is not a bad pickup combination in it. We especially love that Burns gave you both Jazz and Wild Dog settings on the same instrument. No clue what Wild Dog was supposed to mean, but we are glad they went with it.

The tremolo on these is neat too. Instead of pivoting like a more conventional unit, the saddle assembly rolls on bearings, which gives it a silky smooth feel. This one has been set up and restrung and is playing great with low action. The original hardshell case with Ampeg’s signature checkered tolex covering is included.

Available for a test drive in our Jamestown, Kentucky showroom, and we ship worldwide.
