The front has plenty of vintage Japanese charm, but the back is the real showstopper here, with beautifully figured maple that gives this old Univox a lot more visual punch than most people would expect. Even better, it sounds as good as it looks.

Univox can be a tricky brand to pin down with total precision. There is a generally accepted timeline for where and when these were made, but getting all the way down to an exact model designation is not always easy. We have not been able to identify the exact model number on this one, and we have not found another with this exact combination of features. Based on the construction and design details, we are comfortable placing it in the early 1970s, most likely around 1971 to 1973, and it was definitely made in Japan.

This one stands out from the pack. It has a solid spruce top, stunning figured maple back and sides, large pearl block inlays, and bound fingerboard edges that give it a more upscale feel than many guitars from this era and price range. It has clearly been well cared for. The neck has never been off, the bridge has never been off, and both are firmly attached. There are no cracks, no finish repairs, and no signs of abuse, just honest age and a lot of character. The neck angle is correct, though the top has sunk slightly, which is not unusual for a Japanese acoustic of this age.

It has been freshly set up with low action, and it is fully playable exactly as it sits. The truss rod works in both directions. The adjustable saddle is bottomed out in the bridge slot, and the original adjustment hardware is missing, so while it plays well now, a future owner may want to add the adjustment screws back in or fit a different saddle for a bit more flexibility down the road. We have found that these old Univox acoustics can really wake up with a well-fitted bone saddle, so that would be a worthwhile future upgrade if you want to take it a step further. The bridge pins are not all matching. A nice original case is included.

Available for a test drive in our Jamestown, Kentucky showroom, and we ship worldwide.
