1966 Fender Mustang - Old Refin w/ Hardshell Case
We've got a soft spot for cool old Player's Grade Fenders, and this sweet Mustang from 1966 does not disappoint! Typically, when we find refinished Mustangs from this era, they are bogged down with bad aftermarket parts and usually a few excuses or things that need to be addressed to make them enjoyable. This one is on the ready-to-rock end of the spectrum and is a lovely guitar that is ready to make someone very happy. The tuners, frets, and nut are original. The neck is straight and the truss rod works properly in both directions. Fretwear is minimal and not affecting intonation or playability. Check out the beautiful dark fingerboard! The neck date is August 16th, 1966. The body was originally Daphne Blue, and some of it still remains in the cavities. This is a great candidate for a Daphne Blue refin, or any other color that you want, but it's pretty awesome in this dark brownish greenish color. It's an old refinish, likely from the 1970s. We get it... there was a time when the bright Fender colors of the mid-1960s just weren't the right look when you were rocking harder in the 70s and needed a guitar that was darker looking. Refins happened... and if they are old and not awful, we like to leave them be. But, when you own it, you can do whatever you want. If you want a period-looking Mustang, this is the one for you. If you want a nice and mostly original player for a future paint project, then this is also the one for you.
The neck plate dates to 1965....common to find on 1966 Fenders as the engraved plates were made well in advance and not necessarily used in order. The pickguard is original and has mellow yellowed nicely. The tremolo is original but the tremolo arm is not. The bridge is replaced, but the replaced bridge is an actual Fender part and only the bridge was replaced. The original mounting "thimbles" are still on the guitar. Good move! This tells me that whoever owned it was the kind of person who was not tempted to swap out the included brand new shiny thimbles that came with the new Fender bridge. They left the originals intact, and that, folks, is the type of guitar owner we need more of in the world. Thanks, Mustang owner. :)
The original electronics all function as they should. Both grey-bottom pickups date to 1966, as do the pots. The stock brass mounting plates are all intact. The silly and quite puny stock ground wire that goes from one of the bridge thimbles to the grounding plate just wasn't cutting it, so a proper ground wire has been installed between the thimble and the stock grounding point on the back of the volume pot. The two signal/ground wires from the upper switches to the volume/tone pots have been replaced with proper push-back cloth wiring. The original wires are included. All other components are stock and in working condition.
The guitar has been setup and plays well, and has fresh strings. The vintage EZ-Pak hardshell case is a nice addition.
