1971 Framus Western 5/195 Acoustic Guitar - Sunburst
For your consideration, a lovely 1971 Framus Western 5/195 acoustic guitar. We don't see a lot of Framus guitars here in Kentucky, so it's always a treat to have one pass through our shop for us to examine. These Western 5/195 models are neat... they have a compact 00-sized body with a Gibson scale-length neck that has a flat paddle-style headstock and attaches to the body with giant wood screws. It's like if Fender made a Gibson LG2!
This guitar has some wear and tear but has remained in mostly original condition. The original tuners have been replaced and two of the chrome covers are missing. The mounting screws for both of those tuners are actually just small eye hook screws. We were going to replace them but they are doing a great job so we left them alone. The truss rod cover and chrome-plated string routing block are original and the truss rod works in both directions. The neck is straight and the frets have plenty of life left in them. We shined them up and cleaned and hydrated the fingerboard. We shimmed the neck with maple shims to get the optimal neck angle for low action. The guitar plays fantastic! The original plastic saddle has been replaced with a bone saddle with an intonation bump, so it is overall more "in-tune" than a stock saddle configuration. The bridge and pickguard and all other hardware are original and all operable condition. We explored with a borescope and found no loose or repaired braces and no signs of future failures. There are paint chips and scuffs and such and some comfortably worn spots on the neck but nothing abnormal or indicating abuse. It's fun to play, sounds better than expected, and stands out in a room full of traditional looking acoustics. No case is included.
