For your consideration, a 1922 Gibson MB Mandolin-Banjo with its original hardshell case. MB is short for Mandolin-Banjo, and this is a terrific example of a rare early variant from before Gibson had fully standardized the model’s specifications. The factory order number is 11509-7, placing it squarely in this fascinating early period of Gibson production.

This one has a great look, from the plain script Gibson headstock logo to the original open-back hardware and intact interior label. The label remains legible, vibrant, and unusually well preserved. There is no evidence that this one was ever fitted with the later trapdoor-style resonator hardware, and it appears to have been built in this open-back configuration from the start.

The instrument is original throughout. It is currently fitted with a replacement bridge, but the original bridge is included with the sale. The original friction tuners, armrest, and other hardware remain in place. It is a very complete survivor and an especially nice piece for a Gibson collection.

The original green-lined hardshell case is included, along with the original capo, old string packs and wrappers, adjustment tools, and other period accessories that have stayed with it over the years.

Rare, complete, and packed with the small details that make an early instrument like this so enjoyable to study. Just a really nice piece of Gibson history.
