1961 Kay Spiegel - Old Kraftsman - K1962 Value Leader - w/Case
1961 Old Kraftsman Value Leader
Spiegel Catalog Classic • Made by Kay
This is a wonderful 1961 Old Kraftsman, the Spiegel mail-order catalog–branded version of the Kay K1962 two-pickup Value Leader. These guitars are a huge part of American musical history — affordable, approachable, and responsible for launching countless first bands.
We’ll never know exactly how many kids received one of these as their very first guitar… but we’re confident the number is very high.
This example is in great original condition. The electronics are 100% original and fully working, delivering that unmistakable jangly, raw, authentic vintage tone these are loved for. The neck is straight, and the tuners function well, though one is slightly bent — not uncommon on these and part of their honest story. Two knobs have been replaced, and one pickguard screw, but otherwise it remains remarkably intact.
These guitars are known for their nice chunky necks, and this one feels exactly as it should — comfortable, substantial, and full of character.
There are no signs of abuse, only the expected normal wear and tear of a 65-year-old guitar that’s been enjoyed and cared for. It’s fully playable, set up with low action, and still has room for further adjustment at the bridge if desired.
Visually, it’s a great one: a natural top paired with a sunburst back, a short-lived and less commonly seen combination.
The original case and original strap are included — and honestly, they’re almost as cool as the guitar itself.
A true piece of American mail-order guitar history, ready to be played and enjoyed all over again.
