1963 Kawai Crown Solidbody Electric - Japan - Sunburst
For your consideration, a likely Kawai-built Crown import from Japan, and exactly the kind of funky, budget-friendly fun that makes these old Japanese oddballs so easy to like. The headstock is the star of the show here. It is bold, stylish, and a whole lot more dramatic than you would expect on such a simple, stripped-down guitar. Between that, the unusual pickguard shape, and the wonderfully utilitarian hardware, this thing has a look all its own.
The pickup is a big part of the charm too. It has a foil-style look at first glance, but with that blue pearloid insert it stands out in a good way. Whatever you want to call it, it sounds good. This one has that jangly, lively voice these old imports do so well, and it sweetens up nicely when you roll the controls back a bit. Great guitar? Maybe not in the lofty sense. Fun guitar? Absolutely all day long.
This one appears to be 100% original and has low miles for its age. The neck is straight and a previous owner added a shim, which helped it land in a very playable place. The truss rod works, the pickup is healthy, and the controls are all functioning as they should. It is set up with low action and is an absolute blast to fool around on. No case is included.
