1967 Unicorp Power Plus - Early Solid State Pre-Univox - 2x12" w/Horn Reverb/Vibrato Guitar Combo Amp
For your consideration, a 1967 Unicord Power Plus 2x12 combo amp. This is a weird one, and we mean that as a compliment.
Unicord was the company behind what would become the Univox name, and these Power Plus amps came from that brief late-’60s period when they were building some pretty ambitious, feature-packed designs that never stuck around long. They are genuinely uncommon, and we do not see enough of them to pretend otherwise. This one is serial number 325, which fits with the very early-production feel of the whole thing.
The layout is wonderfully overbuilt for the era: two channels, four inputs, spring reverb, vibrato, a pair of 12-inch speakers, and a high-frequency horn. On paper it sounds like one of those forgotten amps that might be interesting mostly because it is obscure.
Then you plug into it.
This thing sounds fantastic. Better than we expected, frankly. It has a big, lively voice, plenty of presence, and a strange but useful blend of vintage American amp character with its own thing going on. The reverb is especially cool, and the vibrato has a pulsing, phasey movement that gives it a lot more personality than the usual budget late-’60s tremolo circuit.
It came to us needing serious help and was serviced by Hunter Amplifiers. Bob went through the circuit, brought the amp back to proper working order, restored the spring reverb, and sorted the vibrato so it behaves the way it should. This was not a cosmetic once-over — it was a save-the-amp kind of job, and the result was worth the effort.
It is now fully functional, sounds killer, and is ready to be used. For the player who likes obscure vintage gear, early production oddballs, or just wants an amp that does not look and sound like everything else in the room, this one is a blast.
