For your consideration, the Hunter Amplifiers Big Kid tube amp head. Do not let the size fool you. This thing is an absolute hammer. Small footprint, huge sound, and built like it was meant to survive a bad attitude and a long road trip.

Like all Hunter Amplifiers, this one was handmade one at a time right here in South Central Kentucky by a one-man shop. That matters. There is a level of care, intention, and pride in these amps that comes through the second you put hands on one.

The Big Kid is a handwired single-ended Class A design pushing a stout 14 watts through a massive 6550 power tube, and it feels every bit as serious as that sounds. Hunter went heavy on the iron here, which is a big part of why the low end feels so deep and authoritative. It is dense, overbuilt, and unapologetically substantial in the best way. The kind of amp that makes you grin a little when you pick it up and realize there is nothing flimsy about it.

Tone-wise, it has a ton of personality. It cleans up with a lively, bell-like clarity when you back off, and when you lean into it, it growls like it means it. Beyond the usual volume, treble, and bass controls, the Big Kid has two especially useful features that really help set it apart. The Voice control lets you shape the gain and response of the input stage in a very usable way, from tighter and more focused to thicker and more open. The Raw control gradually lifts the tone stack, letting you move from refined and dialed-in to a more direct, mid-forward, snarling voice that pushes the power section harder. There is a lot of range here, and none of it feels gimmicky.

It runs a military-spec 5654W pentode, a 6N2P dual triode, and that legendary 6550 power tube, with switchable 4, 8, and 16 ohm output impedance feeding dual parallel speaker outputs. Right now this one is offered as a head-only bare chassis build, which honestly suits it. You get all the industrial charm, all the handwired craftsmanship, and none of the fluff. It looks cool, sounds huge, and feels like a one-off machine built for somebody who actually cares about amps.
