1990s Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Maverick – 1x12 Combo
The Mesa Boogie Maverick is one of those amps that quietly developed a cult following among players who actually spend time with them. At first glance it sits a little outside the usual Mesa family tree, but once you plug in it starts to make a lot of sense.
This 1990s Dual Rectifier Maverick 1x12 combo is a great example, finished in blonde tolex and loaded with its original speaker. The Maverick was part of Mesa’s short-lived experiment with more vintage-voiced circuits, and the result is essentially two different medium-gain tube amps living in the same box. There’s a lot of tonal ground to cover here, from warm country and roots tones to blues, classic rock, R&B, and beyond.
These amps reward a little time spent with the controls. Like many Mesa designs, everything interacts with everything else. Once you get a feel for it, you start realizing just how wide the tonal palette really is. It’s the kind of amp that has lived in plenty of studios over the years because it’s extremely usable across a lot of different styles. Dialing in a great sound tends to happen quickly, and it’s honestly pretty difficult to make this amp sound bad.
This particular Maverick has been recently serviced by Hunter Amplifiers, who gave it a full once-over along with fresh tubes and replacement filter capacitors where needed. It received a clean bill of health and is working exactly as it should. The amp has some cosmetic wear and tear but nothing indicating abuse.
A small single-button aftermarket footswitch is included for remote channel switching.
If you’re looking for a versatile, great-sounding tube combo with a little bit of Mesa personality and a strong vintage voice, the Maverick is one of the more underrated options out there. It’s also simply a blast to play through.
