1974 MSA Classic D-10 E9/C6 8x2 Pedal Steel w/Case and 1980 Peavey LTD 400 1x15" Amp

For your consideration, a wonderfully complete 1974 MSA Classic D-10 8x2 pedal steel package with its original molded hardshell case, vintage DeArmond volume pedal, period cables, and a 1980 Peavey LTD 400 1x15 combo amp. What a lovely package deal. This came from a longtime owner who clearly cherished and thoughtfully maintained it. It has real stage miles and plenty of earned honky-tonk patina, but it was babied where it counted. No shoddy repairs, questionable hardware choices, modifications, or signs of abuse — just an honest vintage workhorse in fantastic condition and working order.

The fine folks at MSA confirmed the birthdate of the steel as March 7, 1974, and confirmed that it left the factory configured just as it sits today: a Classic D-10 8x2 with dual 10-string necks, eight pedals, and two knee levers. One neck is tuned to E9 and the other to C6.

We cleaned the steel thoroughly, but made a conscious effort not to overscrub it or erase 50-plus years of earned character. It presents beautifully. It is big, heavy, and absolutely has the right look. More importantly, it sounds fantastic. The two pickups are selected with a three-way toggle and share master volume and tone controls. The electronics have been cleaned and adjusted and are working properly.

Both necks have been freshly restrung with D’Addario NYXL strings, and the hardware has been cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted as needed. Everything operates smoothly and it holds tuning as it should. This is a genuinely pleasant steel to sit behind. It does not fight you, feel rickety, or make you nervous about using it. It feels solid and substantial. These MSA Classics are really nice steels, and this is a fine example of why they earned their reputation.

The original molded MSA hardshell case is intact and included, including the removable accessory tray in excellent shape. Also included are some original MSA tools, a handful of old picks, a vintage DeArmond volume pedal that has been cleaned and is working properly, and a pair of working 1970s instrument cables. It is a remarkably complete little time capsule.

Rounding out the package is a 1980 Peavey LTD 400 1x15 combo amp. The LTD 400 was Peavey’s supposedly “lighter” take on the legendary Session 400 — nice try, Peavey, it still ain’t light. It shares the same basic DNA: serious clean power, roughly 200 watts on tap, and a 15-inch Black Widow speaker. The amp is working properly and appears to remain in original condition. Paired with the MSA, it sounds exactly like you hope an old pedal steel rig should sound.
